Analyses and visualises citation networks
CitNetExplorer is a software tool for visualizing and analyzing citation networks of scientific publications. The tool can be used for analyzing the development of a research field over time; identifying the literature on a research topic; exploring the publication influence of a researcher and supporting literature reviewing. Users can import citation networks directly from databases like Web of Science, enhancing the ability to track citations across a wide range of publications. It visualizes the most important publications in a field and shows the citation relations between these publications to indicate how publications build on each other. It supports the identification of predecessors or successors of a set of selected publications. Predecessors are publications cited by the selected publications. Successors are publications citing the selected publications. The tool however, cant handle cases where two or more papers cite each other back and forth, which can lead to the exclusion of relevant citation relationships, and therefore limiting analysis.
